Over 130 men turned out on Sunday to play in one of the major events in the club calendar, the Senior, Junior, Intermediate and Minor Scratch Cups, sponsored by M.J. Farrell, Jewellers, Roscommon. The winner of the Senior Scratch Cup was Thomas O’Connor from Athlone with 70 gross. In second place was David Hill with 71 gross. Allan Hill won the 1st nett with 69 nett. The winner of the Junior Scratch Cup was Noel Sharkey with 77 gross. In second place was Dan O’Brien with 77 gross. Thomas Higgins Jnr. won the 1st nett with 70 nett. The winner of the Intermediate Scratch Cup was Paul Hoare with 77 gross. In second place was Charlie Farrell with 77 gross. Tommie Regan won the 1st net with 70 nett. The winner of the Minor Scratch Cup was Albert Looby with 91 gross. In second place was Andy Lawlor with 92 gross. Joseph Finnegan Jnr. won the 1st net with 67 nett. Mark Kearney won the Open Friday competition with 38 points (back 6) and Edmund O’Neill from Howth was in second place with 38 points also.

The winner of the Ladies Open Gala Day, one of the major events in the ladies’ golfing year, sponsored by ECMI – Gerry O’Dowd & Kathleen Kearney Kelly, was Sinead Benedetti with 40 points. Jackie Maxwell was in second place with 38 points. Mary Seymour won the gross prize with 27 gross points and Kate Walshe was in third place with 38 points. The other prize-winners on the day were as follows: 4th Breege Shanley (Co. Longford) 36 points, 5th Bernie Browne 36 points, Cat. A Geraldine Relihan 34 points, Cat. B Maura Kelly (Castlerea) 36 points, Cat. C Noreen Doherty (Athenry) 35 points, Front 9 Katheryn Reilly (Athenry) 20 points (back 3), Back 9 Anne Browne 18 points, Visitor’s Prize Niamh Donnellan (Athenry) 35 points, Junior Prize Sinead O’Brien (Athenry) 35 points. The winner of the Over 55’s on Thursday was John Gunn. In second place was Paddy Hewitt and Gerry Mahon was in third place. Geraldine Hoban won the ladies’ competition and Bridget Kyne was in second place. June Halliday was in third place and Noreen O’Grady was in fourth place.

Congratulations to the ladies’ Meile Fourball team who beat Moate on Sunday and are through to the regional quarter finals. There has been great feedback from visitors on the condition of the course and the Open Week which starts on the 1st July will be a great opportunity to come along and play the course.
