This was another busy week as the ILGU Connacht Ladies Championship was hosted by the club.  The winner of the Senior Championship was Victoria Craig from Belfast and the runner-up was Jessica Ross from Donaghadee. The winner of the Junior Championship was Suzanne McConway from Dromoland and the runner-up was Elaine Smyth from Ballina. Suzanne is the daughter of Niall and  Kay Quirke and she learned her golf on the Roscommon course and was a very popular winner with the Roscommon following. Unfortunately an outbreak of thunder and lightening accompanied by torrential rain forced the cancellation of the Plate competition. Once again there was great praise for the excellent condition of the course from the visitors from all parts of the country.

The winner of the men’s competition on Sunday was Michael McHale with a great score of 43 points. In second place was Noel Farrell with 41 points (back 9) and in third place was Tom O’Farrell with 41 points also. Mario Costello won the gross prize with 36 points. The winner of the ladies’ stroke competition on Tuesday, sponsored by Bernard Keane, Supervalu, Athleague, was Edel Burgoine with 70 net. In second place was Margaret Brennan with 71. Sinead Benedetti won the gross prize with 74. Paula Connaughton was in third place with 72 and Chloe O’Connor won the junior prize with 70. John Martin won the Over 55s competition. Vincent Pierse was in second place and Michael O’Connor was in third place. Hard luck to our Jack O’Sullivan and Cecil Ewing teams who lost out in closely contested competitions during the week. It was a great week for Allan Hill, one of our star junior golfers, who followed up a second place finish in the Connacht  Boys U-15 with a win in the Munster Boys U-15 competition.

Open week begins on this Monday 30th June  and full details of the competitions can be accessed on the club website.
