It has been a good year for our junior members and this week we look back on the achievements of the junior girls. Our Senior girls, Roisin Timothy and Roisin O’Brien were selected to play on the Connacht interprovincial team in August at Donaghadee Golf Club and were managed by our own Rosemary O’Brien and Anne McCormack. Chloe O’Connor was also selected but was away on holidays at the time. It was a great achievement for Roscommon to have three girls selected for this Connacht team of eight members. Throughout the summer these three girls played in a number of championships around the country, the Irish Girls Close in Shannon and the Connacht Girls in Loughrea among many others. They all played in the Ladies Connacht Championships which took place in Roscommon in July and Roisín Timothy produced an excellent 67 nett in the first round of that tournament. Indeed Roisín Timothy had a very good year, winning all her matches on the Senior Foursomes Team which got to the All Ireland Final in Monkstown and she had her first hole in one on the 12th hole in June. She won the President’s prize to the Juniors and dropped 4 shots in just 2 weeks, getting to 7 handicap by early October. Roisín O’Brien produced some great scores at home also winning a number of competitions and getting her handicap down to 13 by the end of the year while Chloe O’Connor produced excellent scores at home, knocking 4 shots off her handicap and winning the Lady Captain’s prize to the Senior Girls and the best nett score in the Golfstyle Connacht U16 Stroke Play competition which took place in Mountbellew. In the junior section we started the year with 8 girls attending the taster sessions in Castlebar which were provided free by the ilgu and ran over a period of 6 weeks back in April. Our group grew to 14 and the club qualified for an ilgu coaching grant which went towards funding 10 sessions run each Monday by PGA Professional Philip Murphy. The girls also had some play on the course and they took part in an open scramble event held at the club in August. We hope to progress this group onwards next year when some will achieve their full handicap. All in all it was a very productive year for junior girls’ golf at our club. The club is grateful to the junior convenors Joan O’Gara and Nuala Hughes for the time and effort which they gave to encouraging the junior girls.
