Roscommon Golf Club lost one of its greatest members on Wednesday last when John MacGuigan passed away. John gave a lifetime of service to the club. He was Captain in 1978, President in 2000 and Trustee up to the time of his death. John had an abiding interest in everything that was happening in the club and was particularly interested in promoting junior golf. John and his family sponsored a Parent and Child / Adult and Junior Competition for many years specifically to encourage the children who were guaranteed to receive some recognition at the prize-giving.

The MacGuigan family have a unique distinction in that both John and his wife Mary were both Captains and Presidents of the club. Mary was Lady Captain in 1976 and President in 1996. Both Mark and Ruth have represented the club at national level and won many honours for the club. Ruth’s husband John and their children are very active members of the club and Ruth is the current convenor for girls’ golf.

On last Friday and Saturday members of the club demonstrated their high regard for John, and their support for his family in their grief, by turning out in large numbers both at the removal and funeral Mass. On both occasions the members formed a guard of honour. John will be sadly missed around the clubhouse as he was a highly intelligent and knowledgeable conversationalist on all matters but especially on golf and sport. He will be especially missed by his wife Mary, son Mark, daughter Ruth, his grandchildren and extended family to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
